Online media: plenty of scope for health news

On the one hand, those with an interest in current affairs in general, or health matters in particular, have never had it so good. A thousand flowers are blooming. New media ventures proliferate at such a rate that journalists struggle to keep abreast of developments, and it must be close to impossible for those busy seeing patients.

One of the more significant new online outfits is The Global Mail, established with a $15 million donation from entrepreneur Graeme Wood. Its managing editor, former ABC correspondent Monica Attard, says Wood has no editorial input.

The website states the mission is, “original, fearless, independent journalism” and “our audience is our only agenda. We have no advertisers to answer to, nor shareholders who seek to profit”.

Although its launch edition featured a health investigation – into problems with AHPRA’s register of health professionals – it’s disappointing the site
