Patient awake during tonsillectomy: Anaesthetist reprimanded

AN ANAESTHETIST whose patient was awake for most of a tonsillectomy has been reprimanded “in the strongest possible terms” for not performing a rudimentary check of his equipment.

Dr Biing-Lin Yin admitted to a Professional Standards Committee inquiry that his conduct in not checking his vaporiser was turned on and failing to properly monitor the patient who could hear and feel during the surgery constituted unsatisfactory professional conduct.
