Pharma spending less on educational events

SPENDING on educational events hosted by pharma companies plummeted by 22% in the six months to 30 March, figures from Medicines Australia (MA) show.

Total educational spending on industry-hosted events fell from $35.16 million in the six months to 30 September last year to $27.42 million in the six months to 30 March this year, the figures revealed.

But educational event spending ‘per head’ fell at only half that rate – from $83.90 to $74.11 in the same period, a decline of just 11%.

The dip in spending came as the number of educational events declined, from 16,880 events in the six months to 30 September 2010 to 13,873 in the six months to 30 March – a fall of 17.81%.

Industry-paid education hours fell almost in line with the decline in overall educational spending by industry – from 34,030 hours in the six months to 30 September 2010 to 27,775 hours in the six months to 30 March.
