RACGP joins Choosing Wisely program

The college has signed up to NPS MedicineWise's Choosing Wisely initiative, which aims to curb the use of such tests and practices, and is expected to launch with a website in April 2015.

"The beauty of the method is that it's asking colleges themselves to come up with their own consensus on tests and interventions we think we'd be better doing less of," said Dr Justin Coleman, one of two RACGP representatives working with NPS MedicineWise on Choosing Wisely.

"I think that approach ends up with a lot more buy-in from individual groups of GPs, or specialists, who are making those decisions.”

While the program is in its early stages, it’s known to have won the interest of the Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia, Royal Australasian College of Physicians, Australasian Society of Clinical Immunology and Allergy, Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Radiologists, and the Australasian College for
