Recycling spectacles may be short-sighted: study

A WA STUDY found only 14.5% of 1800 spectacles donated by the Lions Save Sight Foundation in Perth would correct refractive errors among 200 East Timorese filling prescriptions at an optical workshop in the capital Dili.

It costs $2500 a year to rent the room in Perth where donated spectacles are sold, but the workshop could fill all 29 prescriptions for about $50, suggesting charity dollars should be used to build local dispensing capacity, they said.
