Regional hospital boost through new IMG pathway

The new assessment pathway, piloted by Hunter New England Health (HNEH), has been awarded the NSW Premier’s Award for Innovation in Frontline Delivery.

HNEH continuing medical education director Professor Balakrishnan Nair said the six-month pathway offeredan alternative to the Australian Medical Council (AMC)clinical exam which someIMGs could wait up to two years to sit.

AMC CEO Ian Frank said the HNEH program was one of three trials that included similar models in Tasmania and Western Australia and had attracted huge interest in previously hard-to-fill area of need postings.

So far, 49 IMGs have completed the HNE pathway with another 19 currently being assessed, while 16 more are completing the pathways in the other states.
