Scientists unravel mystery of the inner ear

Findings from a collaboration over 20 years, conducted by Pacific Rim universities, will lead to a paradigm shift in understanding of hearing loss, said Professor Peter Thorne, from the University of Auckland.

The research found a hormone, ATP, is crucial to the process by which the cochlea of the inner ear adapts to noise, “turning itself down”.

This should be regarded now as a normal physiological process, Professor Thorne said.
