Snuffing out toxic lamps for good?

A recent humanitarian purchase – involving US, UK, European and Japaneseagencies – saw 80,000 of the new Mandarin Ultra lamps dispatched to refugee camps in Pakistan.

“Kerosene fumes are toxic… causing respiratory/eye ailments and cancer, and the toppling of kerosene lamps is the largest cause of house-fires,” a statement from the lamp’s Melbourne-based designer says.

“Solar lights provide better and less expensive light than kerosene, enabling childrento study longer and safer at night.”
