A large recently built house in traditional Queenslander style, its guest rooms are similar to those in five-star hotels. Below a balcony running along the rim of the upper storey is a swimming pool.
The Turinas are gracious hosts, spicing evenings with colourful stories about growing up in their Italian homeland.
Though they share a passion for cooking, they acknowledge that many guests don’t enrol in cooking classes, and just want an upscale base from which to sample Hervey Bay’s whale watching and other attractions or to take day trips to nearby Fraser Island .
I sign up for a cooking class and start by making pasta from scratch, before moving on to more complex dishes from the couple’s Piedmont region of north-western Italy.
My efforts – improved by Rocco’s corrective input – are incorporated into the evening’s dinner, accompanied by wines from the region, which the Turinas import.
