I SPENT the last year with Médecins Sans Frontières treating tuberculosis (TB) in the isolated and desolate town of Nukus, Uzbekistan.
With winter temperatures plummeting to below –20°C and summer peaks hitting 50°C, the environment is particularly harsh for those living in local villages and farmland. Close living conditions, poor nutrition and limited healthcare infrastructure have meant that Uzbekistan now has one of the highest rates of multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) in the world.
