The ‘complete the course’ mantra for antibiotics is misguided and should be dropped because it sends the wrong message on antimicrobial resistance, infectious diseases experts say.

There is no evidence that longer courses of antibiotics are needed to avoid antibiotic resistance, and taking antibiotics for longer than necessary increases the risk of resistance, according to Professor Martin Llewelyn, an infectious disease physician from the University of Sussex, UK.
