Women less likely than men to have hip replacement

One in ten Australian women will have total hip replacement surgery during their lifetime, but women still lag behind males in rates of joint replacement for hip osteoarthritis, Victorian research suggests.

A review of data for 45,775 patients receiving total hip replacement surgery in Victoria found the lifetime risk of the procedure for women increased from 8.5% in 1999-2000 to 10.30% in 2007-2008.
