Wound care is this nurse’s calling
A NURSE practitioner passionate about improving wound care has been able to share her enthusiasm with colleagues overseas.
After being awarded a Churchill fellowship, Michelle Gibbs observed the work of world experts in wound care at both the Copenhagen Wound Healing Centre and the Wound Healing Research Unit at the Cardiff University School of Medicine.
Michelle has worked at the Queensland University of Technology (QUT) Wound Healing Community Outreach Service since its opening in 2008.
The service sees up to 40 patients a week (a quarter of whom travel from the Sunshine Coast) and supports GPs, nurses and community nurses to deliver evidence-based wound care.
And while Australia does have wound care clinics, they are not widespread.
Michelle is just one of five wound care nurse practitioners in the country.
