Clinical Review: Reducing benzodiazepine dependence
WHEN judiciously used, benzodiazepines are therapeutically effective.
But when used for longer than four weeks, particularly at high doses, risks develop of dependence in some patients.1,2
Benzodiazepines are not recommended as first-line therapy for insomnia, panic disorders and anxiety (including anxiety with depression).
To reduce the risk of benzodiazepine dependence and misuse:
- Use only for appropriate indications3
- Seek specialist advice before prescribing a benzodiazepine for panic
