Examining statins for the healthy
A HIGH concentration of cholesterol can contribute to cardiovascular disease (CVD). This may prompt the prescribing of a statin even in the absence of other risk factors. Researchers in Finland studied what happens once these people start statins.
They looked at prescription records of 12,000 patients initiated on a statin. None of these people had a past history of heart disease or diabetes.
