Cardiologist takes home $18 million pay packet

A cardiologist is being sued by the US Department of Justice for the billing of $18 million ($A23 million) worth of unnecessary interventions.

The Florida-based Dr Asad Qamar charged Medicare, the social insurance system for US retirees, the colossal sum mostly for interventions for peripheral heart disease.

The amount he received was more than three times greater than that received by the next highest paid cardiologist.
