DIY sperm checker goes swimmingly

The makers of a new smartphone microscope that can detect sperm count and quality say their invention offers relief to men who find it embarrassing to provide a semen sample at a clinic.

Clipped on to the camera of a phone, the microscope lens which is less than a millimetre thick and encased in a plastic jacket magnifies an image by 555 times.

This is perfect for looking at sperm cells, the Japanese researchers say.
