A woman has successfully sued a high-profile US neurologist for damages after he had an affair despite treating her for traumatic brain injuries following a car crash.

Dr Jonathan Fellus, a former director of brain injury services at the Kessler Rehabilitation Center in New Jersey, was ordered to pay the woman US$3.2 million (A$4 million) in compensatory and punitive damages after a jury found him culpable of negligence and inflicting emotional distress.
