How can we treat hangovers?

Simon, a university student, presented to my surgery one Saturday morning looking decidedly seedy.

He mumbled about the early hour that he’d got home that morning and the many drinks he’d consumed the night before. My immediate diagnosis: alcohol hangover. 

“What can I do about this, Doc?”  

What indeed? 

What evidence exists?

A SEARCH for “alcohol hangover” in the Cochrane Library finds a systematic review of randomised controlled trials (RCTs) published in the BMJ in 2005. Searching PubMed does not reveal any new RCTs. I will look at Pittler, et al. (2005)2 in detail.
