Prisoner’s $81.70 Medicare rebate for GP consult lays down legal challenge to 50-year funding ban

Damien Linnane helped connect a GP with a prisoner who would benefit from a Medicare-funded mental health consultation.

When AusDoc interviewed Damien Linnane in 2022, he said the ban on prisoners accessing Medicare rebates meant denying them the same rights as other Australians.

Now, the former prisoner, who served a ten month sentence for arson, thinks he was wrong in a surprising way.

To prove it, the former army medic says he has helped a prisoner claim an MBS rebate for a GP consultation — the first time this has apparently occurred in 50 years.
