Calls grow for govt to act on hospital crisis as COVID-19 deaths rise

The AMA is calling on the new Federal Government to address the hospital crisis “quickly” as COVID-19 deaths rise around the country, even before the winter kicks-in.
Latest figures show 88 deaths from COVID-19 were recorded nationwide over the weekend. And there were 363 deaths in the past seven days, according to state government statistics.
This contrasts to daily toll reports in April that only once exceeded 50 and were often less than 25.
The rise in deaths follows ABS figures, released last week, that showed there were more than 5000 additional deaths than expected in the first two months of this year, with Omicron directly responsible for at least 2521 of them.
