GPs are establishing makeshift drive-through coronavirus testing clinics in a bid to reduce the risk of transmission within their practices.

Former AMA president Dr Mukesh Haikerwal says he has begun performing swabs on patients with suspected COVID-19 in the carpark of his practice to avoid potentially exposing staff and other patients to coronavirus.

Patients who call up with possible coronavirus are asked to have a privately funded video consult with a GP at Dr Haikerwal’s practice in western Melbourne.

After this screening, patients drive to the car park and remain in their vehicles before Dr Haikerwal or one of his colleagues comes out to take a swab while wearing PPE.
