Hacked GP prescription data for sale on digital black market for just $76,000: reports

Officials have warned those affected that they may be targeted by scam emails or text messages.

Prescription software company MediSecure says historical prescription data that were hacked earlier this month have been put up for sale on the dark web.

According to several cybersecurity bloggers, a hacker using the nickname Ansgar is offering to sell a 6.5-terrabyte database of names, phone numbers, emails, Medicare numbers and prescription data for just $76,000.

MediSecure announced on 16 May it had fallen victim to a hack.

Then last week, it acknowledged that the data were being spruiked on the dark web: a group of websites used by criminals and only accessible through special software.
