The government’s plans to potentially cap specialist fees, the issue of non-doctor prescribing and the messy AMA Queensland divorce will be key issues confronting the AMA’s next president.
So far, few politicians have been deterred from granting increasing authority to pharmacists to diagnose and prescribe S4 drugs for medical conditions.
And we also have a Minister for Health and Ageing in the form of Mark Butler who says he is prepared to test constitutional boundaries to cap specialist fees.
Who leads the AMA also matters for GPs, with the RACGP increasingly putting itself in the middle of the medical lobbying space.
