Let GPs dispense abortion drugs, inquiry told

The RACGP also wants changes to antenatal care MBS items.

The RACGP wants MS-2 Step added to the prescriber’s bag so patients no longer have to find a registered pharmacist to access medical abortion.

It also wants Medicare to let GPs bill items 36 or 44 for long antenatal consults and for the PBS to subsidise copper long-acting reversible contraceptives (LARCs) as part of a reproductive healthcare overhaul.

The college put out the wish list in response to a federal Senate inquiry into universal access to reproductive healthcare.

Under the current system, individual pharmacists must be registered with drug sponsor MS Health in order to dispense MS-2 Step (mifepristone and misoprostol), although MS Health has asked the TGA to ditch this requirement.Â
