Medical colleges draw line on ‘extreme fees’ with new patient guide
Australia’s medical colleges have launched a fact sheet for patients to discuss costs with specialists as part of their ongoing bid to address “extreme fees”.
The guidance outlines the patient’s rights and says they should expect to be given a written estimate of what they will need to pay.
Drawn up by the Council of Presidents of Medical Colleges, the advice comes as the Federal Government continues to flag possible fee caps as well as the possible disclosure of individual specialists whose fees are deemed egregious.
“We acknowledge openly that we will not defend extreme fees,” the council’s president Associate Professor Kerin Fielding told The Australian.
