‘Neurosurgeons have circled the wagons’: Dr Charlie Teo a year after his disciplinary hearing

A year after he was sanctioned over his management of two patients, Dr Charlie Teo says neurosurgeons have “circled the wagons” to ensure he cannot operate in Australia.
But he says he has gone on to perform over 150 operations around the world since his professional standards hearing last year.
Under conditions placed on his registration last July, a supervising neurosurgeon with at least 15 years’ experience in the specialty must give approval before Dr Teo can operate on recurrent intracranial malignancies or brainstem tumours.
Similar conditions placed on his registration pending the hearing meant he has not operated on these tumours in Australia since 2021 because he has been unable to find a surgeon willing to supervise him.
