Professor Murphy calls on ICU doctors to tell him if they can cope

ANZICS president Dr Anthony Holley says doctors will need to work 'harder and faster' to manage the surge in critical care demand.

Professor Brendan Murphy has written to intensive care experts asking them to “respond urgently” about critical care’s surge capacity as Australia transitions to a more open, vaccinated future.

Last Thursday, the federal Department of Health secretary sent a letter to the Australian and New Zealand Intensive Care Society (ANZICS) asking it to gather estimates from members to guide modelling work.

The analysis, including workforce modelling, is to be presented to the National Cabinet on Friday.

The move comes after repeated warnings from doctors over the past few weeks that the health system, particularly in NSW, will not be able to cope with rising COVID-19 cases.
