The RACGP has offered “cautious” support for restricting Medicare items for chronic disease management to a patient’s usual GP.

As the Federal Government lays the groundwork for its patient enrolment scheme, the AMA has suggested that GPs should only be allowed to bill Medicare items 701, 721 or 732 for enrolled patients.

The AMA calculates this would save taxpayers $225 million over four years as Medicare claims for care plans and health assessments fell by 4% — money that could be reinvested in general practice.

The Minister for Health and Aged Care announced more detail of the patient enrolment plan, dubbed ‘My Medicare’, on Friday
