RACGP urged to dump push for random accreditation checks

The head of an accreditation agency, Dr Paul Mara, says the college needs a 'reality check'

The RACGP has been urged to dump its push for random accreditation inspections of GP practices, with the idea labelled a “fairytale plan” by an accreditation agency head.

The college says it is investigating the idea of spot checks or practice visits at short notice under a shake-up to create a system of continuous accreditation for the 6200 practices in the program.

In a Federal Government submission last week, it said the shift would also involve GPs sharing their practice data for virtual audits to “engage practices across the entire cycle” of accreditation.

As well as ensuring accredited practices always remained up to standard, this would be less burdensome and resource-intensive than the current system of inspections every three years, the college argued.
