Senator David Pocock tackles GP distribution priority areas: ‘We need a rethink’

David Pocock says he is fighting for his constituents in a flawed system.

Independent Senator David Pocock wants his home city classified as regional under GP recruitment rules and the entire GP distribution priority area system to be put under scrutiny.

Most ACT suburbs are classified as metropolitan Modified Monash (MM) 1 areas, but Senator Pocock says Canberra GPs need the extra support that comes with being named a regional centre (MM 2).

This would automatically classify all ACT practices as Distribution Priority Areas (DPAs), raising their Medicare rebates when rural loadings apply and allowing clinics to recruit IMGs and doctors on the Bonded Medical Program.

However, Senator Pocock — a former rugby star — said the entire system based around the Modified Monash Model was failing.
