Dr Alex Klestov's family hopes to raise enough funds to ensure his patients in Central and South-East Queensland have access to rheumatology services in their region

The family of the rheumatologist swept to his death in the Queensland’s floods have set up a fund to honour their father and help fill the huge gap he left behind for his patients.

Dr Alex Klestov, 76, was trapped in floodwaters last month as he drove home after treating patients in Rockhampton.

His son Peter Klestov says his father had been hoping to retire but with just a handful of rheumatologists in the north of the state, he was driving the six hours from Brisbane to Rockhampton and Bundaberg to ensure his patients were still being looked after.

Tributes flowed from colleagues and patients following his death.
