Westfield stabbings: Could any doctor have intervened before Joel Cauchi killed six people?
It was 'regrettable' that Mr Cauchi's long-time GP did not conduct an urgent review, and most of the doctors he saw were hampered by inadequate information from his former psychiatrist, an inquest finds.
A coroner’s decision to refer psychiatrist Dr Andrea Boros-Lavack for investigation over her management of Westfield Bondi Junction killer Joel Cauchi has divided doctors.
Dr Boros-Lavack treated Mr Cauchi for eight years, weaning him off clozapine, but discharged him from her care four years before he stabbed more than a dozen people, killing six of them.
The coroner said Dr Boros-Lavack omitted critical information when she handed over Mr Cauchi’s care to his long-time GP and did not push Mr Cauchi hard enough to restart his medicine when his mother raised concerns about his behaviour.
But these were not major factors in the 2024 killings, Magistrate Teresa O’Sullivan concluded.
