GPs are facing extinction: It’s time for a rebellion

More than a year has passed since publication of the AMA report projecting a “staggering” GP shortage in the next decade.
At the time, it grabbed headlines with calculations that the current rate of GP training and recruitment would leave Australia short of 10,600 GPs by 2031.
Another report has shown the demand for GP services went up by 58% in the decade to 2019 and one from WA estimated that for every GP practising today, two would be needed in the future.
The demand for GP services is said to be driven by population growth, ageing, increasing numbers of visits per patient and longer GP consults for complex cases.
