The Road by Cormac McCarthy. Alternately bleak and exhilarating. His austere descriptions kept me immersed and troubled for weeks. 

What is the single best piece of advice you would give to a medical student?

Listen carefully to your patients, it is a rare privilege. Patients all want to feel better. They don’t always tell the truth but if you listen carefully you can hear what they are trying to say. The biggest errors I have made medically, and perhaps personally, are when I have not listened
