Arts profile - Dr Peter Smeeth
RETIRED GP Dr Peter Smeeth is not unaware of the irony surrounding his 2011 Sir John Sulman Prize?winning painting, The Artist’s Fate.
Now a full-time artist based on the NSW Central Coast, Dr Smeeth describes the work – which recently took out the prestigious annual painting award at the Art Gallery of NSW – as an attempt to express the feeling of rejection.
“Whether it is a relationship, you lose your job or whatever – you feel like someone has poked you in the eye with a sharp stick, ripped your heart out and left you gutted,” he told MO.
“But you do a painting about rejection and it not only gets accepted but wins? You can’t get much more un-rejected than that.”
