Being a child bride is bad for your health
MORE than 9.4 million women living in the US have been married at 16 years or younger, a study suggests.
Researchers assessed the marriage age of women taking part in a national survey on alcoholism and related disorders, finding those who married as minors were more likely to later report substance abuse and major depressive disorder.
“We found that child marriage was associated with a broad range of psychiatric disorders,” the authors said.
They also found a higher divorce rate (48%) among former child brides, compared to women marrying as adults (28%).
Child marriage is legal, with parental or judicial consent, in most US states.
