'Bill shock': Calvary targeted by consumer watchdog

THE Calvary private hospital group has agreed to come clean about possible higher out-of-pocket costs for patients discharged early after an investigation by the consumer watchdog.

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission found Calvary had failed to make it clear to patients that they could incur additional costs and lose out on rebates if their hospital stay was shorter than anticipated.

Such patients could suffer "bill shock" in instances where their hospital stay was charged at a fixed rate but their insurer offered rebates on a per-day basis.
