An epidemiologist and public health physician internationally recognised for his work on climate change, Professor McMichael led the assessment of health risks for the UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change for many years.
He also contributed to knowledge about the health risks of tobacco, uranium mining, ozone depletion and lead production, among many other achievements.
Professor emeritus of population health at the ANU, he was not far off his 72nd birthday when he died of complications in Canberra Hospital following influenza.
