GPs give sick notes to avoid conflict

GPs DECLARE most patients with work-related injuries “unfit for work”, inadvertently delaying patient recovery and costing the workers’ compensation system more than necessary, according to a new study.

Despite strong evidence showing a fast return to work as the best path to recovery, the Monash University study shows in 70% of cases GPs certify injured workers as unfit.

The survey, claimed to be the first on the subject of GPs and workers’ compensation certification, interviewed 17 injured workers, 25 each of GPs and employers, and 26 workers’ compensation
