Misuse of topical antibiotics in prisons

Interviews with 822 inmates from two maximum security prisons found that among those reporting use of topical antibiotics in the previous six months, 59% of males and 40% of females were using over-the-counter ointments on dry skin and lips, to grease their hair or to shave.

“Antimicrobial-resistant pathogens are a problem in prisons, and the misuse of antibiotics in these facilities might exacerbate this issue,” the authors said in a statement.
