Opioid overdose soars among Boston's homeless

DEATHS due to drug overdoses have increased threefold since 1993 in Boston, Massachusetts, researchers found after analysing the records of 1300 homeless people.

Overdose fatalities accounted for more than a third of deaths among adults younger than 45, and 81% of those deaths were due to opioids, the researchers said. Homeless people had a ninefold higher mortality rate.
