Partner abuse rife among pregnant women
South African-led researchers conducted a survey postpartum among 2042 women aged 15–49.
Some 63% of the women reported physical, emotional or sexual abuse while pregnant. This included 46% experiencing physical and/or sexual violence, 39% sexual violence, 16% physical violence and 10% reported severe violence – meaning six or more episodes – during pregnancy.
Physical violence was less common in pregnancy than the year prior to pregnancy.
