Perioperative beta blockers ‘may have caused 800,000 deaths’

The latest twist in a controversy over discredited guidelines for perioperative use of beta blockers has seen cardiologists claim the ‘tainted’ advice could have contributed to 800,000 excess deaths in Europe.

UK cardiologists Professor Darrel Francis and Dr Graham Cole made the predictions about the implications of Dr Don Poldermans' scientific misconduct in an article that was quickly withdrawn ‘for peer review’ by the European Heart Journal.

Dr Poldermans was the lead author of two key trials on perioperative beta-blocker use and
