Rail to sail

An elegant couple sashays along almost the entire length of the Queen Adelaide dining car. They’re dressed to kill. I notice other passengers aboard The Ghan discreetly giving them lingering – and withering – looks. Some even roll their eyes. In this clickety-clack environment, ‘smart casual’ is more customary – but he wears a dress suit with bow-tie and her shimmery floor-length gown is a background to some serious jewellery. “Overdressed,” sniffs a man at a nearby table, “Definitely not old money.”
