Report parents of at-risk kids
An article in the latest issue of the Medical Journal of Australia cites the case of Gloria Sam, a nine-month-old, who died in 2002 from infected atopic dermatitis (AD) after her father, a complementary medicine practitioner, used homeopathy instead of corticosteroids to treat her.
Her parents were found guilty of manslaughter in 2009.
The authors said readiness to involve child protection authorities when parental fear and beliefs based on misinformation put a child with AD at risk was essential for medical practitioners.
