Severe childhood asthma leads to adult COPD

Children with severe asthma have a much higher risk of developing COPD as adults, a long-running Melbourne study has shown.

In a follow up of children born in 1957, researchers have found that severe asthma in childhood was associated with a 32-fold higher risk of having COPD by the age of 50 compard to non-asthmatic children.

However, the study found that intermittent and persistent asthma in childhood was not associated with an increased risk of COPD in later life.
