Tobacco is dangerous: Treat it with caution

I now work as a marketing academic, researching how the marketing strategies of tobacco companies keep people smoking.

Australia has led the world by introducing the plain packaging of cigarettes, but a new report from Cancer Council NSW suggests carefully styled pack designs are not the only marketing tactic that matters. Wide distribution of cigarettes is also making it hard for smokers to quit successfully.

The report found tobacco retailers are everywhere — with an overall average of more than 17 per postcode, and more than seven per postcode in outer regional and remote areas.

The study only looked at retailers in NSW, but there’s no reason to think the results wouldn’t apply across Australia. Cigarettes are progressively being removed from display across Australia, but having lots of tobacco retailers
