AT UNIVERSITY we were all taught the old adage that a correct estimate of the patient’s alcohol intake is double the amount they admit to. What Dr Alycia Utberg, of Strathfield, NSW, had not realised until recently was that patients can apply the principle in reverse.
She went to visit a friend whose husband had sustained a scalp laceration the day before, requiring tissue glue.
“And,” added her friend, “he had a shower and got it wet this morning, even though the doctor told him to keep it dry for 48 hours. He doesn’t listen to his doctor’s orders.”
