Doctor’s right to free speech attacked? Read the AMA WA response

A heated debate erupted last week over claims the main doctor groups were silent when Dr Alida Lancee was cautioned for comments she made in her campaign for voluntary euthanasia reform.

The Medical Board of Australia ruled the Perth GP had threatened the public’s confidence in the medical profession.

The board’s actions were an attack on a doctor’s free speech, said Dr Heather McNamee, a GP in Cairns. So why didn’t the AMA WA defend her?

“[They were] missing in action,” she wrote on the Australian Doctor website. “We heard nothing from them. In fact, they did worse than that. They added to the medical board’s fire by stating (falsely) that Dr Lancee’s comments contradicted the medical profession’s ‘generally accepted views’.
